Greed and Genres
Cinema should not live by fairy tales alone; the effect of family viewing on box-office attendance matters, but it is not the only measure. Global demographic change, a shifting social and cultural landscape, and global economic turbulence all require creators to rethink their approach to the films they make. Older audiences, whose formative cinema-going experiences were shaped by films very different from today’s franchises and comic-book adaptations, are waiting for films of their own. Which genres can and should find an audience in the new world cinema? How do audiences respond to new creative offerings? How are these trends playing out in Russia and worldwide? These themes will be central to the discussion.
Points for discussion:
• Who is today’s cinema-goer? How is the demographic changing and how should producers’ offerings change in response?
• The importance of genre diversity.
• From ancient Greek epic to war films: the most successful theatrical examples illustrating the need for genre diversity.
